What is EDT and do I have to do it?
Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a mandatory 12-lesson course for all learner drivers who
received their first permit on or after 4 April 2011. You must complete all 12 sessions
before you can sit your driving test.
What is the "six-month rule"?
First-time learner permit holders must wait at least six months from the date their first
permit was issued before they can take their driving test.
When should I book my test?
You can apply online via MyRoadSafety.ie once you have your permit, but you cannot be
scheduled until all 12 EDT sessions are uploaded.
EDT is just part of your driver training. You will need to get more driving experience by taking further instruction and practicing what you have learned in EDT until your ADI confirms youβre ready to take the driving test.
No. If you fail your driving test you do not have to repeat EDT. The only exception is if
your learner permit has lapsed for five years or more. In this case you will have to:
β’ Pass a new category B driver theory test
β’ Get a new learner permit
β’ Repeat EDT
